What it is:

Dermaplaning is manual exfoliation with a sterile, single-use surgical blade, held at a precise angle and feathered across the skin to lift away the outermost layer of dead cells and the fine vellus hair ("peach fuzz") sitting in it. No acids, no suction, no heat — just skilled hands, a proper blade, and about thirty minutes.

The immediate payoff is obvious the moment you touch your face. The compounding payoff is what happens after: without that layer of dead cells and fuzz in the way, your serums absorb dramatically better, your SPF sits more evenly, and makeup applies the way it does in commercials. It's the treatment that makes everything else in your routine work harder.

And no — this is not the same as shaving your face with a drugstore razor. Blade quality, angle, technique, and prep are the difference between professional dermaplaning and a facial you could give yourself in the shower, which is also roughly the difference in results.

The process:

Prep:

Cleanse and degrease — the blade needs a clean, dry canvas.

Treatment:

Short, feathered strokes across the face, section by section. It feels like a light scraping — most clients find it oddly satisfying, and there's zero pain.

Calming serums and SPF on skin that's now absorbing at full capacity — the best possible moment for actives.

After:

Does dermaplaning hurt?

Not at all — no numbing, no sting, no recovery. It's a gentle scraping sensation most clients describe as satisfying.

Will my hair grow back thicker or darker?

No — see above, and feel free to make me explain the follicle biology in person. It grows back exactly as it was, typically in 3–4 weeks.

How often should I get dermaplaning?

Monthly is ideal — it matches both your skin's shedding cycle and the vellus hair regrowth timeline.

Can I wear makeup after?

Yes, though most clients don't want to — your skin looks its best straight off the table. If you do, it'll apply better than it has in months.

Is it safe for sensitive skin? All skin tones?

Yes to both. No acids, no heat, no pigment risk — it's frequently my recommendation for skin that reacts to chemical exfoliation.

Can I just dermaplane at home?

At-home tools exist, and so do the micro-cuts, patchy results, and irritation I see from them. A single-use surgical blade at the correct angle in trained hands is a different treatment. If budget is the concern, tell me — we'll build a plan that works instead of a workaround that doesn't.
